Two things shape roofing in East Lindfield: the age of the housing and the tree canopy over it. A quiet, leafy residential suburb of Federation and interwar homes on large blocks, bordering Garigal National Park bushland. Much of the stock is Federation and Californian bungalow, a good deal of it inside Ku-ring-gai heritage conservation areas where roof form, pitch and material are part of what is protected, so a re-roof can be a planning conversation as much as a trade one. A good deal of the land here sits against bushland and is mapped as bush fire prone, so on those blocks roofing work has to meet the construction requirements in AS 3959 for its assessed bushfire attack level.
The canopy is the other half. Mature gums and turpentines drop leaf and bark into valleys and gutters year-round, and shaded southern roof planes hold moisture long enough to grow moss. Most East Lindfield leaks trace back to one of those two things rather than to a failed roof.
The classic East Lindfield leak is a valley that has silently filled with leaf litter, held water against the metal, and rusted through under the tiles. Close behind are cracked and slipped Marseille tiles, ridge capping with perished mortar, and chimney flashings on the older homes. We lift tiles and inspect the valley rather than guessing from the stain, replace corroded valley irons, repoint capping, and clear the debris that caused it.
On a heritage-listed or conservation-area East Lindfield property, replacement means matching the original rather than modernising it. We source period terracotta profiles and slate to match the street, keep ridge, gable and eaves detailing intact, and prepare the documentation a Ku-ring-gai heritage officer will want. On post-war and contemporary homes we talk you through terracotta, concrete tile and Colorbond on merit. Removal and compliant installation handled either way.
Under this much canopy, maintenance is not optional. Gutters and valleys need clearing at least twice a year on most East Lindfield properties, more often where a large gum overhangs the roof. Our visits clear valleys, gutters and downpipes, treat moss and lichen on shaded planes before it lifts tiles, check and repoint capping, and reseal penetrations. Bushfire-prone properties get their gutter protection checked too.
Second storeys, rear additions and garden studios are common across East Lindfield, often on steep or heavily treed blocks with difficult access. We work with your builder from framing through sarking to finish, match new roofing to the original in conservation areas, and detail the junction between old and new so it does not become the first leak. Access and tree protection are worked out before we start.
A hundred-year-old East Lindfield roof can have decades left or be a season from failing, and you cannot tell from the driveway. Our reports assess tile and slate condition, valley and flashing corrosion under the tiles, capping and bedding, sarking presence, and the debris load in the drainage. You get photographs, condition ratings and a clear separation of urgent work from planned maintenance.
Gutters in East Lindfield work harder than almost anywhere in Sydney, because they are full of leaf for most of the year. We replace rusted and sagging gutters, correct falls so water reaches the downpipe, upsize downpipes where needed, and fit quality leaf guard that suits the debris you actually get, since fine she-oak and gum leaf defeat a lot of cheaper mesh. On bushfire-prone blocks we fit non-combustible gutter and valley mesh with the aperture size AS 3959 requires, in corrosion-resistant metal rather than plastic.
Working on century-old terracotta is a different skill: brittle tiles crack underfoot, valleys are often hand-formed, and bedding mortar can be sand by now. We know how to work this stock without new damage.
Steep pitches, brittle heritage tile, sloping blocks and mature trees make these roofs demanding to work on safely. Every job has edge protection and anchor points. Our crew is certified and fully insured.
Matching a Federation roof means having somewhere to get the tiles. We source salvaged and reproduction terracotta, slate, period valley and flashing materials and Colorbond through trade supply.
The cheapest thing you can do is clear the valleys before they rust through, since a rusted valley means re-laying tiles across the whole run. We are straight about which category your roof is in.
Federation homes, Californian bungalows, post-war brick and contemporary builds across East Lindfield. Terracotta and slate repairs, valley replacement, rebedding and repointing, full re-roofs in tile or Colorbond, gutter renewal and leaf protection. We work to Australian Standards, match materials properly on heritage properties, and give you a written scope with fixed pricing before anything starts.
Schools, medical suites, offices and strata buildings around East Lindfield and the surrounding centres. We schedule around occupancy, manage access and compliance on buildings that stay open, and work with the metal, membrane and tiled systems these properties use, with staged pricing and the documentation strata committees need.
Summer storms bring branches down on East Lindfield roofs, and a heavy limb through brittle terracotta opens a roof up fast. We repair storm damage, fallen branch damage, leaks and blocked drainage, then complete permanent repairs. Everything is photographed as we go, which makes the insurance claim considerably simpler.
Terracotta dominates the older East Lindfield streets, much of it Marseille pattern laid before the war and still serviceable if looked after. We replace cracked and slipped tiles with matched profiles, rebed and repoint ridge and hip capping with flexible pointing, replace rusted valley irons, and treat the moss and lichen that shaded southern planes attract.
Colorbond suits East Lindfield additions, garages, studios and contemporary homes, and it is the sensible choice on bushfire-prone blocks where a non-combustible covering is required. It is also lighter than tile, which matters over an existing structure. In a conservation area we tell you honestly whether metal will get approval before you commit.
Flat and low-slope roofing turns up on East Lindfield rear additions, garden studios and mid-century homes, and on the pergola and deck roofs common on sloping blocks. Under a canopy these are debris traps, so falls and drainage matter even more. We install and repair membrane systems with genuine falls, keep outlets accessible, and detail upstands and penetrations so they do not become the weak point.

I have had a fantastic experience with this business from start to finish. They are professional experienced, very fair and reasonable. We needed to replace the roof on our outdoor deck which was slightly tricky. Their advice and suggestions regarding product to use was sage. After a downpour there was a bit of a leak between the main building and the deck roof which they came out to fix which resolved the issue. There have been plenty of downpours since and everything is fine. I would highly recommend this company without hesitation. They are excellent.Posted on Google![]()

Thankyou to TomKat Roofing and particulary Scott who did an excellent job repairing my roof. I had a water stain on the ceiling in one of my rooms, I called TomKat Roofing. They sent out a technician (Tim I think his name was) to have a look at the roof and that was followed by a very clear & comprehensive quote with what work needed to be done. The quote was supported by photos of the roof showing the problem areas. Tim was very polite & knowledgeable. He explained to me what needed to be done as a matter of urgency and what would need to be done for maintenance purpose and he showed me the photos. The price was very reasonable for the work that needed to be done. Scott carried out the repair work. Scott is very pleasant to deal and he knew exactly what he was doing. He worked just about all day to finish the job for me and I was very happy with the results and my roof problems have now been solved. I was very impressed with everyone I dealt with, from the ladies in the office who prepared my quote to Scott who completed the job , they are all very friendly and most of all they know their stuff. I think they're an asset to TomKat. I highly recommend TomKat Roofing and I would definitely use them again.Posted on Google![]()

I contacted the team at TomKat roofing as I noticed a small leak in my daughters room during the recent storms and I was pleasantly greeted over the phone by the admin team who took down all my details and soon after I had the scheduling team call and arrange a suitable time to come out and review my concerns. The team promptly identified what the issue was and fixed it promptly. I can’t thank the team enough and whilst I hope I never need to call them again due to a roof issue, I would gladly recommend them to anyone looking for professional workmanship.Posted on Google![]()

I highly recommend Tomkat Roofing for an efficient, well priced and solid quality roof replacement. My old, droopy and leaking terracotta tile roof is now straight and strong with a reinforced structure, new corrugated colorbond roof, gutters, facias, downpipes and leaf guard. Some of the key positive experiences I had with Tomkat Roofing are: The efficient and friendly office staff always responded quickly and kept me informed of the progress and when the tradesmen would be onsite. At the start of the job, within a single work day, they had a team of roofers and carpenters to get the old tiles off, the roof structure repaired/reinforced and the colorbond sheets with insulation secured so that my home was protected from the weather. Fortunately the weather was clear for a few days, but it was reassuring to know that they were prepared to work incredibly fast in the summer sun to keep my home safe. The site supervisors were always friendly and took the time to explain everything to me and respond to any concerns or questions I had about the job. Being an older build home, I had a few items that needed particular attention and everything was completed to my satisfaction. A word of advice for home owners looking to get a roof replaced with Tomkat Roofing: Raise as many of your objectives and concerns as you can as early as possible. I found the Tomkat team very responsive to my overthinking mind and everything I wanted to get done was outlined in the quote and addressed during the job. Also, they do tidy up and take away all the waste building material during and at the end of the job, which is great. But be prepared each evening to clean up smaller items that take time to find, like random screws or nails that were dropped, if you have children or pets accessing the area around your home in the evenings. It is unreasonable to expect the workers to find every dropped item each day if you also want the job done quickly.
Tomkat Roofing has spent over twenty years on Sydney roofs, including a great many century-old terracotta roofs under North Shore tree canopy, including East Lindfield. We are a licensed, insured team and winners of the 2024 and 2025 Australian Small Business Champion Awards in the roofer category.
Every job starts with a proper inspection, including under the tiles where the real problems hide, and ends with a written scope and fixed pricing. If clearing your valleys and repointing the capping will get you another decade, that is what we will recommend.
Signs like leaks, sagging, missing tiles, or water stains often indicate the need for repair. However, if your roof is over 20 years old or has widespread damage, a full replacement may be more cost-effective.
Yes, we are fully licensed and insured, giving you confidence that all work is carried out to Australian standards and safety regulations. Our team is committed to delivering high-quality roofing services.
The timeline depends on the size and complexity of the roof, weather conditions, and the materials used. Most residential roof replacements take between 2 to 5 days. We’ll provide a clear timeline before the work begins.
Absolutely. We stand by the quality of our materials and workmanship. All our roofing work comes with a workmanship guarantee, and we use materials that are backed by manufacturer warranties.
